Israeli, Palestinian Leaders In Talks
Jerusalem - Israeli and Palestinian leaders renewed efforts Monday to end their conflict by year's end, but their first meeting in two months deteriorated into accusations that each side was not living up to a U.S.-backed peace plan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made no evident progress at the three-hour session at Olmert's Jerusalem residence. It was their first face-to-face talks since Abbas suspended biweekly meetings in response to an Israeli offensive to stop rocket attacks from Gaza.
Officials on both sides indicated that the talks descended into accusations that each side was not doing its part under the 2003 "road map" for peace that is the basis of the negotiations
The revealing sentence was "It was their first face-to-face talks since Abbas suspended biweekly meetings in response to an Israeli offensive to stop rocket attacks from Gaza."
For the supposedly "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas/Abu Mazen, it's fine to talk to Israel as long as he can keep lobbing missiles at Israeli civilians in Sderot, Ashkelon and anywhere else he can reach, but if Israel deigns to defend itself, well, that's just unacceptable and it's time for him to give Israel the silent treatment.
Grow up, Abu.
